Going to camp takes on an entirely
different meaning for ninth grade students in northwest Ohio
when they spend two days at Camp Med at the Medical College
of Ohio.
Campers are recruited through recommendations
of school guidance counselors and science teachers in 19 counties.
They must have career interests in science or medicine. Campers
are from small rural and inner city communities, where professional
career opportunities might be somewhat limited.
During camp, the "med" students
study a specific disease and learn about it through basic
science labs with hands-on demonstrations. For instance while
studying about diabetes, the campers dressed in hospital scrub
suits learned how to conduct blood sugar tests, the importance
of exercise to a person with the disease and how the disease
can impact various organs of the body.
Second-year medical students are counselors
for the camp and share the ins and outs of medical school
with the campers. To help them prepare for science and medical
careers, the importance of four years of high school science
and math are stressed during the camp.
