Cultural Experiences

Migrant workers and Native American Indians in northeast Ohio no longer have to go without health care due to programs provided in collaboration with two northeastern Ohio universities.

Kent State University nurse practitioner students conduct health clinics at the Migrant Ministry in Hartville. Adult workers and their children receive health services and prevention care throughout the summer growing season.

Nurse practitioners from the University of Akron and medical students from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine provide interdisciplinary health care several times a week at Medicine Wheel, the North American Indian Cultural Center in Akron.

Nursing, nutrition and dental hygiene students serve both rural and inner city underserved clients at the Youngstown Community Health Clinic and the rural Lisbon Community Health Center from

Youngstown State University. At the Hartville Migrant Ministry, Kent State University nurse practitioner students gain clinical experience.

With the clinics held in familiar buildings and surroundings, underserved clients from culturally diverse backgrounds are provided with health care while students develop cultural sensitivity for vulnerable populations.
