Long Distance Learning

Appearing on television doesn't give health care professionals in southeastern Ohio a case of the nerves. It gives them valuable training and continuing education.

With grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine Consortium for Health Education in Appalachia Ohio has expanded distance education to remote areas of the state.

Two-way videoconferencing systems have been installed in rural libraries to give health care providers more opportunities to access information and education. Through telephone

lines, television monitors and advanced technology, the distance education allows interaction between presenters and participants. When participants ask questions at remote locations, cameras focus on them and then other cameras at the site of the origination turn to presenters for the answers.

Continuing education programs are provided for nurses on a variety of topics. Other health care professionals also use distance learning to decrease their isolation and to improve and maintain the quality of care available in their communities.
