Practical Experience
For third year medical students at Wright State
University working at the Yellow Spring Family Practice Center is
a change of pace from attending lecture after lecture.
The practice is owned and operated by the
university's family medicine department. It was developed and continues
to operate as a teaching practice.
During five-week clerkships, medical students
work side-by-side with the physicians. Due to the nature of the
practice, patients' appointments are scheduled at a leisurely pace.
This allows physicians, students and patients more time together
to explore and diagnose health care problems. The center schedules
about 50 percent more time with each patient to allow for the teaching
experience.
After each patient visit, students and physicians
discuss the case and prepare for the next patient. This teaching
clerkship at a community practice helps medical students prepare
for future careers.
